Alfred L. Baker, M.D.

 

Dr. Alfred L. Baker received his B.S. (1962) and M.D. (1966) degrees from Wake Forest University. He did residency training in Internal Medicine at Emory University/Grady Memorial Hospital, and completed fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Tufts New England Medical Center in 1972. He also served as Chief Medical Resident at Tufts.

Dr. Baker joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1973 where he was promoted to Professor of Medicine and Director of the Liver Study Unit. There, he also helped to develop the first Liver Transplant program in the Midwest. He moved to Northwestern University/Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 2000 where he helped to expand the institution’s program in liver transplantation and in general hepatology. During his career he published more than 100 papers in scientific peer reviewed journals. He was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 by the American Liver Foundation.

Upon his retirement in 2005 he was awarded the rank of Emeritus Professor of Medicine. He continues teaching and administrative activities at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
