How can you tell if a patient has ascites?
You can see ascites when conducting a physical exam. You will also be able to feel the swelling upon touching the patient's abdomen. The abdomen will be noticeably swollen. The patient may be unable to fasten his/her shirt or pants as a result of the swelling.
