Now that we have the background on this problem, we need to start making some decisions. I know the farmers are concerned and they are expecting a recommendation from our agency.
Possible Solutions
As I see it, there are three courses of action:
- Farmers can do nothing. They can simply let the powdery mildew overtake their wheat fields.
- They can treat uninfected surrounding crops with a fungicide typically designed for peppers. While it isn’t a guarantee, I think we can reasonably assume a fungicide designed for peppers would work.
- They can destroy the crop.
Before the agency will recommend an action, we always carefully analyze each option. There are so many factors to consider when making a decision like this. We have to think about cost, effectiveness, environmental impact and any other factors we believe will be important to members of the community. Every potential solution has its drawbacks and I guarantee we won’t please everyone with our recommendation. However, we will try to look at a problem from every angle, so that when we present our decision we are confident that we can defend it.
Your Task
Here’s where you come in. I’d like you to continue working with your colleagues and conduct an analysis of the three solutions I’ve outlined above. As part of your analysis, I’d like you to determine whether any of the options can function as a long-term solution or if additional long-term measures will need to be taken. Once you have completed your analysis, I’d like you to write up your recommendation on what you believe to be the best course of action.
I look forward to reviewing your recommendation.
Thanks,
Colleen Peterson, PhD.
