In your role as one of a team of bioethicists working for the Center for Ethical Genetic Engineering, you are tasked with presenting to a congressional subcommittee on the genetic modification of pets, crops, and human muscles. You'll first pursue each of those areas separately, and later, you'll tie all of your work together in a final report.
Within each area (pets, crops, and human muscles), you'll be presented with specific questions to answer, posed by the Congressional Subcommittee on Biotechnology. To answer these questions, you'll do the following for each area:
- Conduct Research: Working with your team, you will conduct research in order to answer the questions the committee members have, giving them a solid foundation to make decisions regarding genetic modification. You also need to keep track of your research in order to support each of the other projects in this rotation.
- Conduct a Focus Group: As part of your research on genetic modification, each member of your team will conduct a focus group. The focus groups will help give you a better understanding of the public opinion of genetic modification.
- Develop and Deliver a Multimedia Presentation: Working with your team, you will decide what method best conveys the information you are going to present; develop the presentation utilizing that method; deliver it to the committee; and answer any questions they may have afterwards. (You'll ultimately give four presentations--one in each specific topic, and then one as part of your final reporting.)
- Debate: Your team must use your research to participate in a debate with another team. Each team will be assigned a position arguing for or against genetic modification and will need to defend that position.
After completing the above tasks in each area, you'll deliver a final team presentation, and each member of your team will write a final report detailing and defending his/her own position on genetic modification and when, if ever, it is acceptable to allow the relevant technologies to be used.

To get started:
By clicking on "Introduction" under "Your Tasks" you will see your supervisor's first email to you, describing your task, and an email from the head of the subcommittee. These emails give you an overview of the tasks you will be doing in this rotation. Once you’ve read the emails, you can continue to "Part I: GM Animals" to begin working on the first topic. Once you're at the first task in this section, click the “Get Help” section at the top of the page for a step-by-step guide and other resources to help you do your work.
Note: You must complete a focus group early in this rotation. It is recommended that, as early as possible, you review the section on Focus Groups in the step-by-step guide in Task 1.1 and begin recruiting people in order to stay on schedule.
