Internal Medicine
Your Tasks

In the role of general medical resident at Lincoln Regional Medical Center, you'll work under the attending physician at the hospital's walk-in center. Shortly, you'll meet your first patient. Your ultimate goal is to figure out what's wrong with him and how to make him better.

Over the next few weeks, you'll also work with the hospital's ethics committee to come up with solutions to several tough problems. The chair of the committee will instruct you further when she is ready to enlist your help.

The progression of assignments is as follows (which you may access in the left menu):

  1. Develop Differential Diagnosis: Meet the patient and take a first pass at diagnosing the cause of his symptoms.

    >>Ethics I: A reformed drug addict on Methadone needs a liver transplant. Should he receive the same priority status as a patient not on methadone?

  2. Confirm Diagnosis: Interpret test results and confirm the diagnosis.

  3. Explain Diagnosis to Patient: Explore both non-surgical and surgical options for the patient.

    >>Ethics II: There is no treatment recommended for a terminal cancer patient. The patient insists on surgery nonetheless. Should you listen to the patient and perform the operation?

  4. Explain Treatment to Patient: Explain the diagnosis and treatment plan to the patient.

  5. Review Potential Donors: Review potential donors both physiologically and psychologically, and then make a recommendation to the attending on the best course of action.

    >>Ethics III: Buying and selling organs: Should we allow it?

  6. Explain Surgical Procedure: Explain the surgical procedure to the patient in detail and field questions he may have.

  7. Draft Post-Op Plan: Create a post-op plan for the patient, which should include dietary restrictions, drug regimen, exercise, etc.

  8. Conclusion/Reflection: Conclude and reflect on the rotation experience.
