I have just gotten word from the National Disease Control Center (NDCC) that several more cases of coccidioidomycosis have been identified. While cocci is not unusual in certain areas of the country, we are very interested because none of these cases have originated in the endemic areas. The NDCC tells me that, because these cases all came in the same time frame, they are investigating the possibility of an outbreak. With our experience working on the Ella Cruz case, they asked if we could loan one of our employees to them for a short internship to assist with the cocci investigation. (She will be referenced by her initials in all correspondence with the NDCC.) I let them know that you are available to help out, so they will be contacting you shortly about your role and responsibilities.
I have attached the final Discharge Summary on Ella's case for your reference. I recommend that you bring this with you to your new assignment.
