Mystery Case

Reflection Questions

Working individually, write a thoughtful response (0.5-1.5 pages) to the following questions. Once you have completed the questions, submit the reflection assignment to your mentor.

  1. Ella was a challenging case to diagnose. Reflect on the ways in which this was a particularly challenging case, both medically and emotionally. Is there something in your life you have experienced that asked the same of you in terms of sticking with it in the face of no progress?

  2. Sometimes, in spite of physicians' best efforts, patients don't make it. This is part of the practice of medicine. What does this experience lead you to think about the practice of medicine generally and your suitability to it in particular?

  3. The differential diagnosis process is an iterative one, and it can be extremely frustrating at times. Think of ways you might modify the process if you could, or balance the challenges with the perceived benefits of the process.

  4. In some medical environments, physicians work as a team. In others, they work independently. You did both team and independent work in this rotation. Reflect on the challenges and benefits to each, and weigh whether you would be interested in working more independently or within a team if you chose to pursue a medical career.
