Sports Medic
Your Cases

In this rotation, you assume the role of an intern at Lakeshore Hospital, working toward a specialization in the sports medicine field.  Dr. Lee Mendoza, Attending Physician, is your supervisor and mentor. You work through a series of four cases involving teenage patients who visit the hospital after sustaining sports-related injuries:

  • Case 1: Tennis Twist
  • Case 2: Skateboarding Slip-Up
  • Case 3: Ankle Angst
  • Case 4: Track Star Troubles

In Case 1, Dr. Mendoza asks you to review the work of a fellow intern, to check that this doctor used sound judgment and made appropriate decisions at every stage of the diagnosis and treatment process, including:

  1. Initial Interviewing and Examination- Talking with the patient and performing a physical exam to determine what needs to be diagnosed

  2. Differential Diagnosis- Listing all possible causes of the patient's condition

  3. Collecting Additional Evidence- Gathering information that will be needed to determine which condition the patient is likely to have

  4. Analysis and Diagnosis- Putting everything together to determine which condition the patient is most likely to have

  5. Treatment and Prognosis- Recommending how to treat the patient's condition and predicting what the future brings

In later cases, you will follow this process to successfully treat patients. Individually and in teams, you plan interviews and examinations, assemble differentials, choose tests to run, and propose treatments. Along the way, you also deal with issues of injury prevention, and each patient has questions and opinions that challenge you to act professionally and responsibly, in ways that doctors in sports medicine often face.

In addition to your case work, you'll also have two tasks in which you'll be asked to "reach out" to people and organizations outside of the hospital. Because the hospital is viewed as an "expert" on medical matters, it periodically receives requests for information or offers advice to those who need it. You'll be involved in two of those efforts.
