Step-By-Step Guide
Task 4.4: Develop Final Report
You have been asked to put together and revise your final report on genetic modification.
The steps below will help you complete this task.
Final Report
- Review the Project Guidelines document that Dr. Woodrow sent to you at the beginning of this rotation to remind yourself of the requirements for the final report.
- Review the email for this task from Dr. Woodrow for more information on the task, and to clarify your understanding of what is expected of you.
- Review your outline for the final report you created previously.
- Revise your outline to match the current stage or your thinking. Although there may be some minor changes, the outline needs to reflect the information you plan to include in your report and the order it will appear in.
- Make sure that all the points in your outline support the main topic of the final report: "Should genetic modifications be allowed? If so, under what conditions? If not, why not?"
- If you have points that are interesting but do not support this topic, determine whether they can be used in a way that does, or if they need to be removed.
- Conduct any additional research that is needed to fill in any areas you feel there are weaknesses and/or you don't feel you have enough information.
- The quality of the research and note taking that you have done previously as well as your level of involvement in the completion of the prior projects will affect how much or little additional research you need to complete at this stage.
- Write your final report. The final report needs to be 10-15 pages in length, double-spaced, with a standard font, font size, and margins.
- Review the General Skills Resources link (in the left menu) for information and tips on writing, citations, and bibliographies, as needed.
- Support your statements by citing evidence from your research.
- Use proper citations, both in text citations as well as building a bibliography.
- As you write your report make sure you stay on topic and that the order flows logically from one section to the next.
Tip: If you run into difficultly in a section, try working on a different section and returning to it. The other work may help clarify your perspective and make the original section flow more smoothly.
- If you run into problems try talking through them with one of your team members or someone else you know.
- Although you can talk with your team about your work, the final product needs to be your own.
- If you're still having trouble, talk to your mentor for guidance.
- Review and revise your report.
- Read through your report and revise as needed. Keep an eye out for general points involved in writing (e.g., spelling, grammar, organization), as well as the points mentioned in this step-by-step guide, the email, and the Project Guidelines.
Review and Submit Your Work
- Review your work.
- Do all your statements support the main topic of your final report?
- Did you back up your statements by citing evidence from your research?
- Did you use examples from the other work you've done in this rotation to illustrate points?
- Did you use points where you disagreed with others on your team about as support for your main arguments?
- Did you review Dr. Woodrow's email and the Project Guidelines you were sent earlier to ensure that your final report satisfies all requirements?
- Is the sequence of your report logical with smooth transitions?
- Did you review your final report for error and revise accordingly?
- Submit your work.
- Review the checklist located in the Submit Your Work section of this task to ensure completion of the task before submitting your deliverables to your mentor.
- Note: Although there is not a check-in step for this task, if your mentor determines your final report needs further work, your mentor may send it back to you for further revisions. Put effort in to do the work completely the first time so you don't need to do more work later.
