Ethics: Transplant for a Terminal Patient -- Determine alternative solutions
Attachment:
Proposed Solutions Template
Greetings,

Hopefully, reviewing the articles has deepened your insight into this case. Now I’d like you to lay out the alternative actions we might take in Ms. H’s case. You and your colleagues should prepare at least three alternative solutions to her situation. These alternatives should include the two extreme positions (e.g., deny the transplant; approve the transplant), and at least one conditional alternative (e.g., approve the transplant only under a certain set of conditions).

Remember, at this point you are not making a decision about which course of action you believe is best. Instead I would like you to present several options. You should carefully explain each solution and the potential consequences of that course of action. For each solution, please be certain to consider the following:

  • Whom does this solution affect—both negatively and positively?

  • How does the solution address the ethical principles you identified in your earlier work?

  • What are the consequences of this solution—both negative and positive?

Like you did with Mr. F’s case, please be sure to consider all parties, including the hospital and society. Please use the attached Proposed Solutions template to organize your work.

Thank you,
Chris Jones, M.D.
