What is viral meningitis?
The meninges are a layer of protection for the brain which reduces the likelihood of damage to the brain during impact or injury. Meningitis is the infection and inflammation of the meninges, and also involving the cerebral cortex immediately adjacent to the meninges. The cortex is where all the functioning in the brain connects, so the inflammation can result in a reduction of all motor and sensory function throughout the body.
Viral meningitis is the most common form, and is caused by one or more viruses. Click here for more information.

Treatment Options
Viral meningitis is serious but not usually fatal unless the immune system has been otherwise compromised. The symptoms often last 7-10 days with a complete recovery with no intervention needed besides rest, fluid and medication for the fever and headache. However, bacterial meningitis can be quite serious if not rapidly identified and properly address. Tthe symptoms of viral and bacterial meningitis are the same, so proper diagnosis is critical for the safety and welfare of the patient.
