What is a fever?

A fever, also called pyrexia, is the body’s natural defense against infection. Normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. A slight rise in temperature helps kill bacteria or viruses that cause infection.

How do you know that someone has a fever?
Physicians must take a patient’s temperature to determine if s/he is running a fever, A patient has a fever anytime his/her temperature rises above normal. A patient running a fever often has other associated symptoms like sweating and shivering.
