OVERVIEW
In this “On Your Own” task, you will participate in a group discussion regarding the diet plans you followed earlier in the rotation. You’ll also conduct a nutritional interview with a peer, who will serve as your “client” and then ask him/her to complete a survey providing you with direct feedback on the interview.
Keep in mind that you should complete the “On Your Own” tasks in parallel with the corresponding West Side Clinic story-based task. Refer to the rotation schedule for details.
Participate in a Group Discussion about the Healthy Diet Plans
In On Your Own B you had an opportunity to follow two different diet plans and experiment with the foods you eat. Now you will have a chance to meet with your group of peers and compare notes on your experience. Your mentor will lead a discussion, encouraging you and the others in the group to identify similarities and differences among the plans. As you talk with your peers, think about what insights you can share from your experience and what you can take away from one another.
Conduct the Nutritional Interview
In On Your Own B you prepped for the interview and selected an acquaintance or peer to serve as your “client.” Now you will use your questionnaire to capture notes in a 30-minute nutritional interview. Before the interview begins, be sure to collect the Diet and Exercise Journal that you asked the client to fill out in On Your Own B (you will need it later to analyze the client’s diet history) and ask your client to read and sign the Confidentiality Agreement. Help them understand that all information will be kept confidential between you and the mentor, unless a referral is required. Remember to videotape or record the interview so you don’t miss any important information. Later, you will meet with your mentor to receive feedback on how well you captured notes and conducted the interview. You may share your analysis with your client only after your mentor has reviewed it and given you permission to do so.
Request that your Client Complete the Customer Satisfaction Survey
After you conduct the nutritional interview, you’ll want to ask your client to fill out the Customer Satisfaction Survey and hand it back to you before they leave. This will ensure that you receive helpful feedback while it is fresh in your client’s mind. Later, your mentor will use the survey, along with the video or audio recording and your completed questionnaire, to provide you with coaching and support.
After the interview, submit the completed Client Questionnaire, Customer Satisfaction Survey, signed Confidentiality Agreement and the recorded interview to your mentor for feedback.
