We got another good question that a teen sent in to our web site today. This one inquires about rice as a sole source of protein. I’d like you to answer it on behalf of the clinic staff:
>Question from clinic web site:
Dear Virtual Nutrition Advisor,
I’ve been experimenting with different diets lately and have been trying to make sure I still get adequate amounts of protein (I know a balanced diet is important!). The problem is, I don’t like a lot of typical sources of protein--but I love rice. It seems to me that a healthy diet could consist of rice as its sole source of protein. Is that true? If not, how come?

Remember to provide a detailed response that really gets at the science behind the nutrition. For example, you’ll want to talk about why the body builds protein, what protein is and why rice may or may not be an adequate sole source of protein. Don’t forget to mention other good stuff relevant to protein like amino acids, essential amino acids and polymer!
