I am sorry to inform you that Nick Herren died last night after 72 hours in the ICU. He went into cardiac arrest, and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Because the reason for Nick’s collapse during the basketball game is unknown, I have requested an autopsy and the Herren family has given consent. The body is now in the custody of the medical examiner, Dr. Cameron Wood. The medical examiner will be contacting you to discuss the details of the case. I’d like you to stay involved and work closely with Dr. Wood. Nick Herren was a healthy young athlete, so it’s important to understand the reason for his death.
Also, the Herren family decided to donate tissues. Their son’s donation will be handled by Organ and Tissue Donor Services after the autopsy is completed.
