Reflection Questions
Working individually, write a thoughtful response (1-2 pages) to the following questions. Once you have completed the questions, submit this reflection assignment to your mentor.
- In this rotation, you've looked at three different patients with three different conditions. Describe how the diagnosis process applied to each patient, identify any differences you saw, and explain why you think they occurred.
- Imagine that you observe your dog (or someone else's dog) limping. Dogs, of course, cannot report their symptoms to you. In light of this, how would you apply the diagnosis process to determine what is wrong with the dog and to determine an appropriate treatment plan? How would your process be different because the dog can't speak?
- Jenny Anderson's condition turned out to be more serious than originally diagnosed/treated.
- Do you think the initial treatment plan was a mistake that should have been recognized at the time? Why or why not?
- How would you recommend that a patient similar to Jenny be dianosed in the future?
- In the practice of defensive medicine, doctors err on the side of caution when deciding what tests to order, ranging from specific testing (to confirm a patient’s condition) to running additional tests that are not related to the patient’s condition at all. What is your position on the practice of defensive medicine?
- Describe and defend your position, noting where it falls on the spectrum between ordering every test available and ordering as few tests as possible.
- Give examples of how your position would apply to the patients you encountered in this rotation.
