As I promised, I have some more information and some documents to send to you so you can get started on your first case.

Your First Case: Observe and Critique
Today, I would like you to start working on your case review. As I mentioned before, you are going to observe and critique a sports injury case handled by one of your colleagues, Dr. Jessica Chang. The patient, Jenny Anderson, is a 14-year-old female who came in recently with ankle pain and swelling after a trip-and-fall accident during a tennis match. Ankle injuries are one of the most common conditions we see in teen athletes.

You'll critique Dr. Chang's approach in pieces, starting with the patient interview and examination. I have attached a video of the interview and exam, as well as Dr. Chang's notes on the case; you'll use those to evaluate Dr. Chang's work.

Our department has templates (standard forms) that we use to write up critiques. I have attached the form you should use to critique the interview and examination; I recommend that you focus on the interview first.

For the first part of the case review, I'd like you to go over the video and notes to see how skillfully Dr. Chang conducted her initial interview with Jenny Anderson. Evaluate her performance with regard to both the style and content of her interview (both what she said and how she said it), using the template as a guide.

Next, observe the process Dr. Chang used during her physical examination of Jenny Anderson. For this part of the critique, go back to the video and the notes to focus on Dr. Chang's physical examination of the patient. Your job is to assess whether Dr. Chang took all of the proper actions in the patient's physical exam while also keeping the patient calm and comfortable.

Good luck!

Lee Mendoza, M.D.
