Answer: Ice Cream and Murder
The confounding variable in this case is hot weather. Hot weather is associated with ice cream consumption, and hot weather is associated with high murder rates, so in the original study it makes it look like eating ice cream and murder rates are associated, but the confounding factor, hot weather, is the more likely explanation.
