Inability to Walk

What is the inability to walk?

The inability to walk is simply when a patient’s pain is so severe that s/he can’t put any weight on one or both legs and therefore can’t walk.

How do you know if a patient is unable to walk?

When a patient has a leg, hip or ankle injury, doctors assess the patient’s gait (manner of walking) as part of the physical exam. If the patient cannot put any weight on the affected area and thus cannot walk, a doctor will note that during the physical exam.
